Pitch: 7B - Low bounce
Weather: 2 - Hot and sunny
Toss: West Indies
West Indies won the toss and batted first, and all their batsmen spent time in the middle in a confident display.
After Haynes 78 and Simmons 35 added 77 for the first wicket in 100 balls, Lara raced to 62 to off 44 in the later overs to give the innings momentum.
With the lower order and tail striking the ball well, West Indies made 269/7 off their 50 overs, despite the odd ball keeping low, a score that seemed a matchwinning one at that point.
Muralitharan bowled well to take 3-43, but received little support, Labrooy the best of the others with a couple of expensive wickets.
Sri Lanka A lost a couple of early wickets in reply, but Atapattu 74 and captain Tillakaratne 94 batted superbly to take the home side close.
Late wickets in an inspired spell by Patterson, who took a match winning 4-40 in a Man of the Match performance, stalled momentum, and gave the West Indies a deserved 21 run victory.
The home side had run them close and provided superb entertainment, raising hopes of a close Test and ODI series later in the tour.
West Indies won by 21 runs
