With the pitch best for batting on Day 1, and set to deteriorate quickly, the South African Board XI batted first upon winning the toss.
They lost a couple of early wickets, but Gary Kirsten with 66, and Jack Commins with 46 laid a solid platform and saw off the early threat of Wasim and Waqar, and then blunted the spinners.
Tauseef Ahmed grabbed a couple of wickets in a long spell of offspin, but with a few other batsmen making handy contributions, the Board XI reached a solid position early on Day 2.
With hot and humid conditions favouring swing, Wasim and Waqar had bowled well, but a thunderstorm wiped out an hour and 40 minutes play just as they were gaining momentum.
The home team batted on upon resumption, at the time thought to be a defensive move born of fear of losing, before a second thunderstrom flooded the ground completely and wiped out the rest of the day's play.
With 2 days of the match now used up due to over 5 hours lost to thunderstorms, the home side declared on 262/9 in order to give their bowlers a chance on a now Uneven wicket.
Wasim and Waqar had bowled well for Pakistan in a return to form, while Tauseef bowled probably the best spell of spin by the Pakistanis on tour so far in an impressive hit out.
