Zimbabwe Board XI v England A - 50 over List A match 1991/2 - Match Report

Zimbabwe Board XI v England A - 50 over List A match 1991/2 - Bulawayo

Pitch: 2A - Dry and Grassless - good for batting

Weather: 9 - Chance of thunderstorms

Toss: Zimbabwe Board XI

Zimbabwe Board XI won the toss and batted first on a good batting pitch, hoping to put up another good score against a struggling England A side.
They immediately lost Shah to Reeve for a duck, but a 143 run stand for the 2nd wicket between Arnott and Carlisle laid a platform for a large total.
Arnott as eventually out just short of a century for a well paced 95, while Carlisle made 53.
Late hitting by an in form Iain Butchart lifted the total to 230/5 off 50 overs, a position the home team would be very happy with at the break.
In reply England collapsed badly against the seamers, falling to 98/6 off 28.3 overs, the match seeming all over.
But allrounders Mike Watkinson and Phil Newport add 89 in 91 balls to put England A back on course.
A brilliant unbeaten 97* off 93 balls with 16 fours and 2 sixes by Watkinson gave England A a chance going into the last 6 overs, requiring 45, but when Newport fell the later batsmen could not maintain the rate.
Watkinson lost strike for the final overs, narrowly missing a century, and his team ended up losing by 17 runs, adding to his disappointment.
It was a wonderful counterracking innings when all seemed over, and for that and his tight 9 over spell, Watkinson was named Man of the Match;

Zimbabwe Board XI won by 17 runs
